Now all over the world, countries accepting Kyoto Protocol for lowering of carbon emission have agreed for reduction of energy consumption of 20 to 30 % by 2020 and all countries had made it mandatory for use of high efficient electrical system for saving of electricity in lighting, home appliances, pumps sets and electrical motors because one unit (Kw.Hr.) of saving result in lowering of 95gm. of carbon emission as per United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), a body formed to regulate the emissions in all the countries and to provide source of finance and directions to all the countries.

STANDARDS OF ELECTRIC MOTORS TO BE MANUFACTURED IN WORLD FROM 1ST JAN 2011 IS TO BE REVISED AS UNDER


Bureau of Indian Standards in their draft proposal dated 22nd September, 2010 has revised IS 12th June 2015 for electric motors 3 phase induction new standards as shown below.

A peep into History


Since 18th century brush DC motors have been the most prominent variable speed technology & were invented by Werner Von Siemens in the late 1800. It revolutionized variable speed control of industrial machines. The AC induction motor came much later in 1924, invented by Nicholas Tesla.
In 1962 two engineers, T.G. Wilson and P.H. Trickey published a paper(2) in which they described "BRUSH LESS DC MOTORS" or called as on to date "AC SERVO MOTORS'.
Magnet and power switching device technology prevented this invention from becoming a practical general purpose drive technology until the late 1980s when one US based company Powertech Motor Inc. started manufacturing general purpose brush less systems at twice the prices of DC systems.

In the 90's, AC drives were beginning to see widespread use during this time as well, since power bridge technology was allowing inverter drivers to make AC induction systems a practical alternative to DC system in some applications.

AC inverters did not provide good torque control or smooth speed control, however, and could not be used in many applications.

By 1993, AC inverters developed into "vector" technology that gave the vector inverter the ability to use an AC induction motor to provide independent torque and speed control similar to DC, but using as AC induction motor.

A war has been raging ever since between the two technologies & that has benefitted the industrial consumer.

The prices of DC systems (brush DC Motors) have remained at 1980 levels in spite of inflation, while the price of AC vector systems has dropped to the point that both the technologies are close to the same pricing (with exceptions at the size being extremes).

Brush DC systems have reached the pinnacle of their design, with better motor brushes, frame configurations and drives with software control providing the best possible performance and reliability.

AC induction motor systems have been advanced to solve most of the standard induction motor problems running on the most modern AC vector drive designs with high speed IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors) and advanced control algorithms.

Note: Ordinary AC 3 phase TEFC (Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled) motors are not recommended by motor manufacturing to be operated by AC Drive at speed lower than 75% of full rated speed because cooling system in the conventional motor AC 3 phase is designed for rated RMP only. See annexure 'A' showing inverter motor, which can operate on AC Drive below rated speed up to 20% of maximum RPM, the motor should be of alluminum for high emf & heat at low speeds displace.


21st century motors D.C. Motors brush less / AC Servo systems have also gained ground with better magnets and much improved drive controls and because the motors are designed for zero to full speed. BRUSH LESS DC MOTOR or called AC SERVO MOTOR has gained momentum in the world market & ordinary AC motors are replaced by BRUSH LESS DC MOTOR (BLDC) / AC SERVO MOTOR and machines fitted with this system is called CNC (Computerized Numerical Control System) technology.

Today's brush less drive systems include motors made with the robust 3rd generation Neodymium-iron-Boron magnet materials that have much better thermal characteristics and high magnetic strength.

With today's corona-resistance magnet, wire insulation, improved magnets and the exceptional performance of modern brush less drive, the industrial customer has the availability of a drive system capable of the roughest application that will also provide high accuracy performance at competitive prices and a very heavy torque at slow speed, thereby eliminating gearing mechanism & allowing overt electrical efficiency and conservation of energy.

Applications, where brush less drives are being used today, include those not typically requiring very high performance drives, but requiring tough, dependable, continuous duty operation.

A significant number of applications on extruders, wire drawers, winders, cranes, cable tensioners, conveyers, pullers, printing processes, roll formers and other traditional "tough" applications are being done with BRUSH LESS DC / AC SERVO drives from the major drive system manufacturers.
